První poštovní známkou Evropy a světa vůbec byla legendární Penny Black (1 Penny), vydaná ve Velké Británii 6. května 1840. Společně s touto hodnotou byla rovněž vydána Two Pence Blue (2 Pence). Více ke vzniku prvních poštovních známek např. zde.
Prvními poštovními známkami vydanými na kontinentu byly švýcarské 4R a 6R z kantonu Zürich z 1. března 1843.
